THE PENINSULA
HONG KONG
In a world where it has become fashionable to condemn everything, Britain has done in the past, The Peninsular stands as a reminder of all the great things we have done. There is, I would argue no greater place to have afternoon tea than the famous lobby in The Peninsular, nor any greater view in the world to be had, than when downing a large Bombay and Tonic in the iconic Felix restaurant at the top of the hotel. I travelled to Hong Kong for many years before I could actually afford to stay there, but visited it whenever there, so when I finally could be picked up at the old airport in one of their fleet of Rolls Royce’s was a moment, I knew I “had arrived”. These days guests can be picked up by helicopter and check in on the rooftop reception, but most don’t as the train service from the new airport is so efficient and you can still be picked up in a Roller!
From a position point of view there is nowhere better with all the major shopping malls within walking distance and the old Hong Kong just outside the back door as a reminder of how far it’s come. New York is famous for it’s hustle and bustle but Hong Kong beats it hands down. If you haven’t been, go.
